A Few of My Favorite Things

When I left full-time employment for full-time motherhood just under six years ago, I was feeling pretty good about my professional life. I finally had a job I loved at a beautiful, respected and well funded library. I wasn't exactly sure how much my life or priorities would change, but I had a rather vague vision of working part-time to keep my skills sharp and my foot in the door while still being my children's primary caregiver. I'm not sure how I got lucky enough to actually pull this off so far but I can say it hasn't been without a great deal of compromise.

My lovely new coworkers have skills I know little about. Sometimes they talk about things that I am so alarmingly unfamiliar with that I just smile and try to play off my ignorance (other times I do swallow my pride and ask questions). And they are so young. It seems like just yesterday that was me.

Living on one income has taken a bite out of our technology budget. Our home has one computer. I do not own a Wii, an i-pod, or a Kindle. My cell phone is the same one I bought six years ago. It makes and takes telephone calls.

I need to wrap this up now. I started trying to write this six hours ago. Since then I have scrubbed two floors, done two loads of laundry, made two meals for two kids, washed a lot of dishes and went swimming. I have been interrupted about a million times and finally set the kitchen timer for five minutes and told my kids not to talk to me until it went off. I'm going to try to add some photos and make this look pretty after they go to bed.
